When
members of The Lawrence Arms, Alkaline Trio, and Rise Against got together
back in 2004 to make music in the name of fun, no one knew it would be
THAT much fun or that their side project would be received so well. After
a lot of laughs and several thousands of copies later, their 5-song debut
CDEP was such a hit with the kids that it prompted the guys to crack some
more brews and work on an entire album. It's been two years since people
got a taste of The Falcon, and their debut full length, Unicornography,
is the full course that the scene has been demanding. Alkaline Trio and
The Lawrence Arms have been super busy with their own rocking, and ol'
Todd moved to L.A. effectively removing himself from the band. Other than
that, The Falcon is set to take to the skies and deliver a pint of freshly
distilled Midwestern punk. Three of Chicago's most notable rockers and
fastest friends. 11 songs, and just under 30 minutes. So how did all this
shit come about? These guys should have enough going on with all the touring
their other bands do, right? I think it can all be explained by acknowledging
the fact that Chicago is full of drunks and freezing cold in the Winter.
Of course that's an outsider's perspective, but it makes plenty of sense
if you think about it. The band was more or less conceived in one of Chicago's
numerous old-man bars; probably sometime near last call. "Dude…we should
start a fucking band, man." For historical purposes, you should know that
Brendan and Danny first played together as teens in the ska-punk band
Slapstick. They were probably the biggest ska outfit in the Midwest, but
the kids broke up shortly after high school, only to spawn a slew of other
bands: Broadways, Tuesday, Honor System, etc. Apologies to readers from
Chicago who most likely know all this shit and probably even have a tattoo
of the Slapstick family tree. The point is, these guys are not only vets
of the punk scene, but also old pals who came together to create music,
and that sincerity is evident. Fans of old-school Chi-town punk rock are
going to be especially thrilled with this debut full length as it features
Brendan and Danny harmonizing for the first time in what seems like 10
years. Hell, it HAS been ten years since those wacky teens made a splash
with Slapstick. Not only that-and this may be THE most important thing
to note about Unicornography-this album is a major departure from the
stuff that The Lawrence Arms and Alkaline Trio have been doing. These
songs aren't throwaways or leftovers, they come from an entirely different
place. You're going to hear Clash-esque ska stuff, Guns 'n' Roses megarock,
and anthemic punk singalongs. It's as though they asked themselves, "What
kinda music makes people wanna get drunk and bang their heads…let's do
that!" With subject matter and lyrics that are as hilarious as they are
insightful, this album yields more rewards the more times you hear it.
As momentum builds and with anticipation mounting, The Falcon has been
talked into doing some shows around the release of Unicornography. Another
bonus for you superfans! THE FALCON UNICORNOGRAPHY OUT SEPTEMBER 26TH!
