Sometime
in the late 90's a handful of San Francisco kids formed Enemy You out
of their love for a sub-genre of punk rock that has seemingly gone the
way of the 8-track. I'm talking about quality bands not obscured by time
as much as by major label carpetbaggers, shaggy hair, and runny eye make-up:
Screeching Weasel, The Clash, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, and more.
Remember when there was still a spirit of independence in the punk scene
or when bands had relevant lyrics and we all despised Reagan in unison?
It's this element of punk rock that Enemy You draws upon for influence,
and although their genuine sound may be a dying art form, they soldier
on, oblivious to the trends. Prior to Enemy You, the members were in bands
that were virtually unknown to all but the most devout subscribers of
Maximum Rock & Roll. Does Lookout's Scherzo or Mutant Pop's After School
Special ring any of your bells? Of course they don't! At any rate, it
wasn't long before the band was receiving interest from Ben Weasel and
his fledgling label, Panic Button Records. This of course led to their
debut appearance on the four-way split dubbed Four On The Floor alongside
Screeching Weasel, Teen Idols, and Moral Crux. A fine debut no doubt,
which was then followed up by their first full length on Lookout/Panic
Button titled Where No One Knows My Name. Par-tay! Based on the this early
success the band was then afforded the opportunity to play with some of
punk rock's most notable bands: Bouncing Souls, Lagwagon, Bad Religion,
TSOL, Mad Caddies, and even a short stint on tour in support of NOFX.
Things were gangbusters for Enemy You, and they then dug in for a couple
months to write their second LP. Those may have been the most productive
and creative months ever for David Jones and the boys as they emerged
with their most dynamic tunes yet. And that's where we are at present,
with the aforementioned sophomore album Stories Never Told. Fourteen songs
of West Coast punk done so right that it'll make you forget about the
current dismal state of underground music. Never mind all of those bands
and the corporate rock machines behind 'em, this is sincere punk rock
that is both smart and infectious. Don't take my word for it, the record
is currently the top seller at Interpunk and one of the few albums to
EVER receive a five-star review from the biggest online fanzine, punknews.org.
Maybe there's hope after all… I can appreciate the various "-cores" as
much as anyone, but, like the reviewer of their recent "Stories Never
Told"-I have a soft spot for this kind of catchy and energetic music.
